Katie is 11 years old today! Thank you, Dr Marlene Smith and Dr Radhika Rajagopal, for keeping her with us still! Allsgold’s Kalamity Kate CDX DD AGNS RA HIT BMDCCWorkingDogAward At 17 months of age, Katie came down with Aseptic Meningitis (aka Steroid-Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis) and was very, very sick. As Katie stabilized on her way to recovery, I started researching the long-term treatments and discovered the lack of information and support for owners and caregivers of these dogs. I made contact with a few other people that I found through the Berner-Garde database, which led me to start the yahoogroup AMBerners in August 2005. Katie has that wonderful berner temperament and despite her liver issues (also auto-immune related) and what the vet believes to be Degenerative Myelopathy, she still makes her best efforts to run around and play with the other dogs. The weekly swimming and acupuncture, together with monthly chiropractic adjustments and assessments keep her going. She falls over quite a bit now, and she sometimes needs help getting up, but she is still happy and cheerful, and still makes it around our 8 acre property every day with the other dogs. If anything, she’s perhaps a little frustrated that the rear end isn’t obeying her orders, but she still digs in and fights back.
