PEMF – Pulsed Electromagnetic Field
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field
What is electromagnetic field?
Positive and negative charges exist everywhere including our bodies. The constant attraction of opposite charges and repulsion between same charge creates electricity – think static or the heart’s electrical activity or the brain’s electrical activity. Where electricity exists, a magnetic force field is created due to flow of electricity.
Our bodies are basically made of cells that contain charged particles called ions, there is a constant movement of these ions (attraction /repulsion) that stimulates a wide variety of electrical and biochemical functions (about 7000 chemical reactions per second). The main ions are sodium, potassium and calcium. The sodium enters the cells through entry channels and potassium leaves the cell through exit channels. These chemical reactions in the cell keep the body in balance. At the same time, because these ions are constantly moving they help the cells to increase their available energy.
This is what the PEMF does, helps to maintain the electrical and magnetic field and helps the cells to increase their energy. If the ions did not keep moving, these cells would be stuck together and incapable of keeping their high energy state. This is called Rouleaux formation. When the ions keep moving in and out of the cell, it helps maintains cell reactions and a healthy body.
After PEMF therapy, the cells will be more unstacked and able to move freely to bring in nutrients and remove toxic products.
What does it do?
- It increases energy, vitality and balance in the body.
- It provides stress relief
- It helps restore psychological and physiological equilibrium.
How is it measured?
There are 3 main components: frequency, intensity, waveforms.
Intensity: An MRI produces high intensity magnetic field – 20,000 – 60,000 Gauss or 2-6 Tesla units.
A PEMF in comparison produces 2000-4000 Gauss units or 0.2-0.4 Tesla units, similar to naturally occurring electro-magnetic fields.
When an electro-magnetic field of low frequency is created, it is able to enter into the body and promote certain repair and healing mechanisms.
History of PEMF:
Originally used in Russia and then the US for bone healing and repair of tendons and ligaments.
Indications for use:
- Arthritis
- Rheumatodi conditions
- Wound healing
- Fractures
- Fibromyalgia
- Lyme disease
- Musculo-skeletal disease
- Neurologic conditions
- Insomnia, depression, anxiety, concentration problems, fatigue
- Seizures
- Urinary incontinence
Difference between electromagnetic radiation and PEMF:
EM radiation is what you encounter from gadgets like the microwave, remote control, Xrays, cell phones etc These emit high frequencies that impact your cell and damage the DNA producing unhealthy cells that do not have their normal charge and cannot perform normal functions – this leads to disease in the body.
PEMF is low frequency and high wavelength.
How does it work?
PEMF uses electro-magnetic fields in very low frequencies. These waves pass through tissues, bones and organs without being absorbed or altered and stimulate electrical and chemical processes in the body.
Contraindications for PEMF:
Persons or animals undergoing chemotherapy/radiation
Individuals with magnetic metal implants
Individuals with pacemakers
Pregnancy
Immediately after organ transplant or skin grafts
What to look for in a PEMF machine.
What is the frequency range that is suitable for the body?
Best frequencies should be 0-30Hz – this is the range produced by nature called Schumann Resonance, where cells can easily absorb the waves.
Why does the machine have a Bio Rhythm or organ clock?
The frequencies of our bodies, brains and the planet changes based on the time of day. Beta waves help us to be more energized during the day. Alpha and Theta/Delta waves induce relaxation and deep sleep in the evening and night. So the machine can be set to energize you in the daytime and relax you at night.
How do I know the equipment is safe?
The frequency should be 0-30 Hz and the intensity not more than 400 microTesla or 4 Gauss. The Earth’s natural intensity is 30-70 microTesla and frequency is 0-25Hz. Ensure that your PEMF equipment delivers these frequencies.
Safety precautions for sensitive individuals:
Use machines with picoT settings for chemical sensitivity. This will produce a very weak magnetic field.
Are there different intensity requirements for different parts of the body?
Use a device that has a lower intensity for the head and neck with higher for the hips and torso and highest for the feet. The head and neck (thyroid) are sensitive areas.
What kind of coils produce the purest pulsating field?
Pure magnetic field is generated by electricity flowing through a circular copper coil.
The equipment should have copper coils tightly wound in multiple turns with no space between the turns as used by NASA.
Other tips on buying PEMF equipment:
The device should have polarity reversal where the signal goes from clockwise to counterclockwise so the body does not get used to the same signal.
Biofeedback should be present to regulate frequencies and manipulate it to what is needed
PEMF at Phoenix Rising Integrative Veterinary Care:
We offer PEMF in 2 different ways.
- PEMF mat and pad – Your fur baby and you can come in for sessions of 20 minutes where you lay
on the mat to experience the benefits simultaneously. The pad is used for local application of
PEMF over a body part. - PEMF 120 sessions: These are in-depth sessions with Georgette Metcalfe. She is one of the first
and of a small handful of PEMF providers trained specifically to operate the PEMF-120 device.
She offers 1h 15 minute sessions twice a month at Phoenix Rising with follow up sessions for 30-
45 minutes.
The device itself will come attached with mats or paddles that are placed on problem areas in the body. Depending on the type of problem, and the severity, Georgette will decide on an appropriate rate and intensity for the pulses, allowing energy to re-enter the cells and restore the body to its peak condition. Depending on the issue, PEMFs can provide relief and recovery quite quickly, such as when used to reduce swelling and inflammation. For more wide-spread issues, such as weakened internal organs or inefficient immune systems, you’ll notice recovery over a longer period hence the need for follow-up sessions. To book sessions with Georgette, please call the
clinic.
