Canuck the Goose: A Sunday Morning Rescue

Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.

Early Sunday morning, Dr. Raj received a call from one of Phoenix Rising Vet Care clients, Lisa, about an injured Canada Goose lying along the seawall near Beach Avenue and Jarvis Street. The goose had suffered a broken leg and, unable to escape, was being relentlessly pecked by crows.

When Dr. Raj arrived, it was clear the frightened bird needed help quickly.

As we gently rescued him, we couldn’t help but lovingly give him a nick-name, Canuck.

Canuck remained remarkably calm as he was carefully transported to the incredible team at the BC Wildlife Rescue Centre in Burnaby. Within moments of arriving, their dedicated volunteers welcomed him with compassion and immediately rushed him in for care.

Watching their team spring into action was a wonderful reminder that there are people working every day, often behind the scenes, to give injured wildlife a second chance.

We’re grateful to Lisa for making the call, to the volunteers at BC Wildlife Rescue for being there to admit him, and to everyone who chooses compassion when an animal is in need.

We don’t yet know what the future holds for Canuck, but thanks to the kindness of strangers and the commitment of wildlife professionals, he now has something he didn’t have on Sunday morning… a fighting chance.
